Qualified Counsellor in York and Ryedale area, North Yorkshire, offering affordable counselling for all!

Welcome, and thank you for visiting Therapy Gets It.

Hi. My name is Mark and I offer affordable person-centred counselling which is all about sharing your experiences and how you are feeling, and how you might want to change, crucially, at a pace, and price, that feels right for you. I use the word affordable as I have been put off by some of the prices charged in and around North Yorkshire, and want to offer access to all, regardless of ability to pay. I am happy to offer both face to face as well as online therapy, or a mixture of the two to suit your circumstances. I realise at different times a different approach may be required. It can be hard to manage everything alone, especially when anxiety, low mood, grief, relationship difficulties, work stress or life changes start to feel overwhelming. Counselling offers you a calm, non-judgemental space to talk things through, understand patterns, and build coping strategies that feel right for you. My aim is to provide a supportive relationship where you can speak openly and feel heard. My decades as a teacher, husband, father and friend have shaped who I have become, and the past few years training as a therapist have been transformative!

To the guys out there!

As a male therapist I know what men go through and how hard it can be to ask for help - I get it and encourage men to reach out for a free 20 minute consultation. You never know! It might be the first steps to changing how you feel about yourself and how you relate to others!

After 4 years training I qualified with a CPCAB level 4 diploma in counselling undertaken at York learning, Burnholme, York. I am a BACP registered therapist and my details are on the BACP register if you want to check them out. This offers clients the reassurance I have the appropriate qualifications and experience. I have specifically worked with Bereavement charities as I feel strongly about suppporting individuals who are in the midst of grief and feel bereft. I have also supported community-based agencies in and around Northallerton and online across Leeds. I have extensive experience working with clients online, and understand as a therapist, and more importantly as a client myself in private therapy online, how the experience can be just as effective as face to face.

WALK and TALK!!!

I am also a Mountain Leader with an ML Award and qualified first-aider and if clients prefer their therapy to be outside in nature I would be happy to 'walk and talk'. Some clients prefer this more informal way of talking to a therapist and in doing so access the many benefits of being in the great outdoors.

A Bit More About Me

I began my journey into the counselling world long before I had realised I would.

Starting in my early 40s I felt something wasn’t quite right and despite becoming a new father and having a good job felt more and more disconnected from my life. As a result of losing my mother, then my job, I experienced very challenging times! A breakdown followed, and in desperation my wife accompanied me to the GP, who recommended a counsellor that might help. Eventually I recovered and felt a burning desire to understand what had happened and started an MSc in Psychology, only to find my real passion was mental health and wellbeing, in other words Counselling!

I have from personal experience and working with clients seen how therapy can transform our relationship with ourself and others and in doing so improve our lived experience immeasurably.

My Passion

I strongly believe our past informs the present and future, and as part of my offer there is an opportunity to look at our behaviours, where they originated, and most importantly modify them to reflect who you are today. I am also informed in IFS (Internal Family Systems) which is a way to look at the multiple parts to our personality, and in doing so address specific unfulfilled needs and wants that might have been with us since childhood. By finding out more about our ‘parts’ we get to know ourselves better.

Integrative Counselling in Ryedale and surrounding towns and villages

People come to me for help with a wide range of issues. Here are a few of the more common difficulties that can be supported through counselling:

Feelings of stress or anxiety

Panic attacks

Relationship problems

Grief, loss or bereavement

Problems with addiction

Trauma and post-traumatic stress

Abuse

Depression

Problems with confidence or self-esteem

Anger management

Issues relating to sexuality

Difficulties at work or in retirement

Problems with family or school life

Male concerns - being seen and heard with compassion and empathy!

Counselling isn’t about being ‘fixed’. It’s a collaborative process where we explore what’s happening for you and what you want to change. I’ll listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and help you notice patterns—so you can make informed choices, build resilience, and feel more like yourself.

My work is grounded in the person-centred approach. That means I offer a genuine, empathic and non-judgemental relationship where you can explore your feelings and experiences safely. I trust that, with the right support, people can find their own direction and make meaningful change. Get in touch today to enquire about a free 20 minute consultation and if we feel we are the right fit, to start the counselling journey.

My Location

I’m based at The Hawk Creative Business Park just off the A19, south of Easingwold, with office space set in tranquil surroundings which offer client confidentiality as it is a discreet building in it's own detached grounds, . Heading towards Thirsk, after the roundabout to the south of the town, there is a turn off 200m down the road on the left. Head down this road and I am on the left before the Hawkshill Estate.

As well as face-face sessions I offer online counselling via Zoom or Microsoft Teams, or if you prefer WhatsApp video calls.

If walking in nature feels right for you we could discuss an area to visit. We’ll agree what feels helpful, and you can choose whether you’d like short-term focused work or longer-term, more exploratory counselling.

Sessions and Fees

Sessions are usually one hour and take place weekly or fortnightly.
